Everest explorers to connect one million students

British explorers to create most extreme classroom on the planet for one million students

In March 2017 British explorers Mark Wood and Matt Dickinson will attempt to summit Everest, pushing the boundaries of education to a remarkable new level.

Their mission: To connect with over one million students using live-stream broadcast from the highest mountain in the world into 8,848 classrooms around the globe. The explorers are on a mission to recruit schools from around the world to take part, for free.

Through the use of cutting–edge cameras, 3D projections and satellite communication technologies, the explorers will take the students with them on this journey of modern exploration while delivering a climate change focused education program.

During a time where research shows that Arctic Shipping routes are open for the longest periods on record due to melting ice, when countries are experiencing their hottest temperatures on record and Arctic sea ice is at an all time low, Mission 8848 aims to inspire the next generation to engage with and understand the impact of global warming on our struggling planet.

Lonely Planet Kids are working with Matt Dickinson to create an exciting syllabus for students from six-16 years, advised by some of the most cutting-edge researchers in the field.

This is an interactive experience for the students, coursework will be undertaken both online and offline with the opportunity to upload their images and films to the 8848 portal, through large format projection technology we will deliver one million voices onto Everest

The focus of the education programme will be on modern day exploration, climate change and understanding the planet we live on. Seminars will be conducted through live stream broadcasts from the lower valleys, forests and the snow line glaciers.

Covering subjects including, the Himalayan Earthquake impact and an understanding of local culture along with the impact climate change is having on wildlife and the ecosystem.

Mark Wood, Explorer and Educator, said: “The journey will take the students through the villages, where they will meet families and other children live. Understanding not only the route but also how a modern day exploration team operates. During our live Q and A sessions we’ll plan our route live with schools. The students will be a part of the team.

"This is an interactive experience for the students, coursework will be undertaken both online and offline with the opportunity to upload their images and films to the 8848 portal, through large format projection technology we will deliver one million voices onto Everest."

No other expedition or team in the world have interacted so closely with so many students from such an iconic environmental platform as Mount Everest.

The expedition team is encouraging schools to sign up for free. Through a partnership with Skype in the Classroom - students around the world can learn in the most extreme classroom on the planet by registering at www.mission8848.com/education
