Is it time to steer your career in a new direction?

Simply Academy explains what steps should be taken if someone is looking to kick-start their career

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to work, especially if you’ve got bills to pay and responsibilities. Even if you don’t like your job and you’re not sure where your career’s going, the thought of striking out in a different direction might seem unrealistic or like too much of a risk.

However, it’s important not to be fatalistic about how you make your living. Switching to a new type of role or even entering into a completely different industry might be easier than you think. Bear in mind that there are a range of training opportunities available now, and many of them can be completed at your own pace online. From general subjects like basic computer skills to vocational qualifications such as mortgage advisor courses, there’s no shortage of web-based programmes available and you can fit these courses around your schedule.

So, if you’re wondering whether the time has come for you to take a new path, it’s worth asking yourself the following questions.

Do you feel unfulfilled?

Does your current role leave you feeling bored and dissatisfied? Does the thought of spending more time in the job give you a sense of dread or even make you feel depressed? If the answers to these questions is ‘yes’, the chances are you’re due a change in direction. Knowing your talents are being wasted or sensing that you’re just not well suited to your position can give you a sinking feeling that pervades all aspects of your life. After all, if you’re not happy at work, it’s hard to be upbeat about other things.

Are you undervalued?

Do you feel like your employer takes you for granted and doesn’t value the effort and skill you bring to your role? Is your pay packet just not enough to give you the lifestyle you want? It’s hard to stay motivated when you’re undervalued as an employee. Whether you’ve been waiting for a promotion that just never seems to materialise, you’re stuck on a pay grade you think’s too low or you simply don’t feel fully appreciated by your managers, it’s worth reconsidering your options.

Your next steps

Of course, coming to the realisation that you want to change tack is one thing; actually taking action to make this happen is something else altogether. If you do decide to take the plunge and change direction, it’s important to set out some practical steps to help you achieve your goals. Firstly, you’ll need to decide exactly what it is you want from your new career and then, once you’ve settled on a goal, research the qualifications and experience you’ll need to get there. Right now, jumpstarting your career might seem like a monumental challenge, but if you approach it in stages and look for practical solutions, you should stand a good chance of getting there.
