Cardiff University launches Data Science Academy
The academy will offer a range of postgraduate programmes in subjects from data science and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity
Cardiff University has announced the launch of its Data Science Academy (DSA), offering postgraduate degrees in fast-growing and in-demand areas such as AI and cybersecurity.
The academy will be open from September 2019, and is being run by Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science and Informatics, in partnership with the School of Mathematics.

Programmes will be based on the university’s National Software Academy model, where students are given real-world experience by working on team-based, client-facing projects.
Dr Federico Cerutti, academic director of the DSA, said: “Technological developments have enabled access to big data at an unprecedented rate. From smartphones to sensors, technology is producing streams of data that hold great potential for bringing about major economic and social benefits whilst at the same time creating wholly new products and services.”
We need more facilities like the Data Science Academy to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills they need to create analytical solutions that can add real value to any organisation.

Existing data science-focused postgrad programmes at the university will fall under the new academy, as well as two new MSc qualifications in AI and cybersecurity.
The launch of the academy has been prompted by increasing industry requirement for highly-skilled, data-literate graduates, and an independent government report from 2017 that stated a demand for skilled master’s and PhD graduates who have the “added practical experience” to meet industry demands.
