King Edward VI School win Cracking the Code competition
A group of students from a secondary school in Stratford upon Avon have won the national Cracking the Code competition with their online game design
A team of students from King Edward VI School in Stratford upon Avon have won the national Cracking the Code competition with their online game design.
Teams from across the UK were tasked with designing a range of adaptive and personalised digital resources for key stage three mathematics lessons.

Winning team Sub-zero Heroes came up with a single player maths game set in an underground mine which helps students learn about negative numbers. The blueprint will now be transformed into an actual game that will be hosted on the Manga High and Nesta websites.
10 teams from 200 entrants progressed to the final stages of the competition. The team from The Woodroffe School in Dorset won second place with their Zookeepers game. In the game, players would learn to feed animals on the zoo by comprehending different shapes, patterns and sequences.
The Cracking the Code competition provides an exciting opportunity for students to use their imagination and apply maths in interesting and creative contexts.

Kate Bower, assistant programme manager at Nesta said: “Maths Mission was set up to increase young people’s interest in maths and the Cracking the Code competition provides an exciting opportunity for students to use their imagination and apply maths in interesting and creative contexts. This encourages the development of important skills like problem-solving and communication. It was really impressive to see a range of creative game ideas from the 10 teams.
“Maths should be combined with other subjects so students are equipped with the broad skillset they need to succeed in the future.”
A Sub-zero Heroes team member said: “We are absolutely ecstatic about winning and can’t wait to see our game made in real life. It’s been fun applying everything we’ve learnt to something that’s actually going to be created.”
The competition is run by Nesta, Tata Group and Tata Consultancy Services and is part of Maths Mission, a programme of activity aiming to improve interest in maths and maths skills through competitions, parental engagement and peer-to-peer mentoring.
