New cyber security degree launched at CU Scarborough
The Coventry University Group institution will address the current skills gap in the UK and prepare students for careers in computing
CU Scarborough, part of the Coventry University Group, has launched a new cyber security degree which is set to welcome students from September.
The course will examine the principles and threats which underpin computer systems, networks and software development processes.
Students will learn about ethical hacking, network security, and how to analyse, evaluate and defend against potential threats.
The course has been launched as the Cyber Governance Health Check, an annual government survey of the UK’s 350 largest firms, found that 54 per cent of the 105 company boards questioned said computer hacking was one of the main threats to their business.
However, 68 per cent of the businesses said they have no specific training to deal with a hacking incident.
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of cyber security, but we will also work with them to refine transferable employability skills as they prepare for a career in computing.
Professor Craig Gaskell, Provost of CU Scarborough, said: “The launch of our cyber security degree is a very exciting development at CU Scarborough.
“As vulnerabilities on data increase, we want to be at the forefront of the digital revolution and one of those leading the fight against cybercrime. There is clearly a skills gap in the field and we are responding to this demand.
“Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of cyber security, but we will also work with them to refine transferable employability skills as they prepare for a career in computing.
“We have already had interest from a number of potential students at our recent open day which is extremely encouraging, and we look forward to the new course starting in September.”
Students who complete the three-year course will be awarded a BSc (Hons) Degree in Cyber Security. A one-year HNC option or two-year HND option are also available.
Potential students can now apply for the course, with limited places available through Clearing. Further information can be found at www.coventry.ac.uk/cus/cyber-security
