Surrey University launches digital entrepreneurial workshop

The programme, IDEA in a Day, is run by the university's Innovation and Digital Enterprise Academy

Surrey Business School’s Innovation and Digital Enterprise Academy (SurreyIDEA) has launched a new workshop for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The programme, IDEA in a Day, is a new digital entrepreneurial scheme for 15–17-year-olds that aims to boost participation in higher education.

Andy Adcroft, SurreyIDEA’s founder, said: “SurreyIDEA was launched with the aim of transforming how young people are educated about business, in order to create a new generation of disrupters and entrepreneurs.

“Our new programme will give young people, especially from hard-to-reach groups, the chance to see what they are capable of now and the positive impact they could have on their professional life later.”

The students will spend a day working on a digital business challenge before performing in a tournament in autumn later this year. The session will be led by academics including visiting professor and founding of Qube learning, Gavin Whichello.

SurreyIDEA was opened in June 2019 and offers two-year undergraduate and one-year postgraduate courses to applicants who may not have the traditional entry requirements. Inspired by the university’s Young Person’s University programme, the university is broadening opportunity for students who may not have the right A levels to pursue higher education elsewhere.

Programme bosses hope to raise aspirations and encourage students to think more about their transferable skills. In a statement, the academy said they were proud not to be “an elitist platform closed off to large segments of society”.
