UWE to launch fintech master’s

The University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol will launch the postgrad degree in September 2019

UWE are launching their inaugural financial technology (fintech) master’s with the first intake set to be in September this year.

The postgraduate course will focus on topics such as cryptocurrencies, blockchain, financial crime, and the ethical challenges likely to arise around new disruptive technologies.

The MSc will include input from the departments of Accounting, Economics and Finance, and Computer Science and Creative Technologies.

Debbie Sturge, departmental academic director for Accounting, Economics and Finance, said: “By bringing the two sets of expertise together, the course will provide a very powerful combination that will lead to students understanding both data science and the world of finance – a rare blend of skills for graduates.”

Skills that students will gain from the course include programming and data science, applied finance and exploration of the fintech environment, as well as a focus on project-based learning supported by industry partners.

Modules for the course are yet to be finalised, but may include blockchain and cryptocurrencies, big data, machine learning and predictive analytics, financial engineering, information risk management, and financial crime.

Dr Jin Sa, departmental academic director for the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies, said: Overall, this programme will play an important part in ensuring that employers and individuals in the finance sector have ready access to the knowledge and skills they need to compete successfully in the global digital economy.”

The course has been developed in collaboration with major employers in Bristol’s fintech sector. Input from employers and entrepreneurs will be integrated into course delivery.
