How software can help provide a holistic approach to learning
Learning platform Satchel One provides schools with the information they need to fully support students both academically and personally
We believe that in order to help students thrive both academically and personally, educators must adopt a holistic approach to learning. Today, we realise that there is so much more to success than exams and grades and that in order to help our students excel, we must consider their specific needs, requirements and wellbeing.
The new framework
This sentiment has been echoed through the new Ofsted framework, which helps to promote a holistic learning experience. Emphasis has shifted away from data and exam results to the curriculum and students’ personal development. This change sees the inspection focus on how schools are developing successful citizens who are knowledgeable academically, socially and personally.
Under the new Ofsted framework, the introduction of the key judgement Quality of Education sees the curriculum put at the heart of education. Its introduction replaced the previous Teaching, Learning & Assessment and Outcomes judgements and see’s them combined. This move means that Ofsted aren’t focusing so much on results, but instead on what curriculum is being taught and how – placing greater emphasis on content and pedagogy.
Personal Development focuses on student wellbeing, both physical and mental, and on ensuring students have the knowledge they need to succeed in modern day Britain
This merging of old judgement makes way for more importance to be placed on Behaviour & Attitudes and Personal Development, which are now two separate judgements and explore important, non-academic aspects of school but are transferable life skills and important life lessons. For example, Behaviour and Attitudes has a strong focus on good pupil behaviour, as well as good attendance and punctuality. Personal Development focuses on student wellbeing, both physical and mental, and on ensuring students have the knowledge they need to succeed in modern day Britain.
Ensuring that the whole child is cared for and educated is a necessary requirement to ensure the success of students, but it’s no easy feat. There is so much to consider and take into account to ensure students are as prepared and looked after as possible. Fortunately, we live in a world that’s tech-infused and data laden – the expansion of edtech has meant that we are now offered valuable insights into students’ performance that allow us to support them.
Using data effectively
However, achieving the level of insight needed to support students whilst not burdening teachers is no easy task. To accomplish this successfully, a single system that surfaces all necessary information is best. This means opting for software that doesn’t specialise in one particular area, but offers insight into many – there is great value in knowing the seating arrangement of a class but there is greater knowledge in knowing why students are seated this way and if they have any specific learning requirements.
Single-solution software isn’t able to provide teachers with the holistic view of a child, whereas multiple solutions can provide a lot of information but quickly become inefficient with multiple platforms and logins. Instead, having a single solution which interlinks between classroom management, home, and teaching and learning can provide you with all the information you need from one place, with a single login.
Saving time and money, with Satchel One
Satchel’s learning platform, Satchel One, provides schools with the information they need to fully support students both academically and personally, through one platform with a single login. Made up of seven different apps, each is an expert in its area but also complements one another beautifully.
Show My Homework ensures students receive carefully detailed homework pieces that allow them to complete work to the best of their ability whilst engaging parents and saving time
Show My Homework ensures students receive carefully detailed homework pieces that allow them to complete work to the best of their ability whilst engaging parents and saving time. With Content, we host Collins textbooks online, allowing teachers to set curriculum-matched tasks in seconds. Seating enables teachers to create seating plans for their classroom based on student inclusion data, creating the optimum learning environment. The addition of Welfare Notes allows teachers to communicate any personal student information securely and discretely to teachers who need to know. Behaviour and Detentions promote positive behaviour, allowing teachers to either acknowledge positive behaviour through the awarding of points or reprimand negative behaviour with simple-to-issue detentions which are instantly communicated to parents. Timetables and Attendance promotes the time-keeping and punctuality of students, encouraging them to be on time to lessons and providing them with their personal timetables through a medium they enjoy.
