Austrian tutoring company GoStudent has announced its acquisition of two established European education companies, Seneca Learning and Tus Media Group.
GoStudent is an online tutoring company founded in Austria in 2016 by Felix Ohswald and Gregor Müller. The company experienced a boom as a result of the pandemic and currently operates in 22 countries with over 1,500 tutors.
The company is currently valued at €3BN, making it Europe’s first edtech company to earn ‘unicorn’ status. In 2021, GoStudent acquired Fox Education and will extend its product offering through its acquisition of Seneca Learning and Tus Media Group.
Seneca Learning is one of the fastest-growing homework and revision platforms in the UK. The company uses algorithms and AI technology to help students memorise subject material, which GoStudent aims to integrate into its membership. GoStudent has ambitions to bring Seneca’s services to users outside of the UK where the company already has a presence.
“The team is excited to build on our success in the UK and take our product international to give more children access to an amazing free education,” said Stephen Wilks, co-founder and CEO of Seneca Learning.
Felix Ohswald, CEO and co-founder of GoStudent, commented: “The United Kingdom is one of GoStudent’s core regions, and we aim to become the market leader. We have listened to the needs of our customers, and adding a content platform to our core offering is an important strategic step for us, allowing us to further enrich our learning offerings and diversify our portfolio.”
GoStudent is also acquiring Tus Media Group, a Spanish-based marketplace platform that helps teachers and students arrange tutoring sessions. GoStudent aims to leverage two of Tus Media’s ventures – Tusclasesparticulares, a platform that leads the market in connecting students with teachers in Spain, and Classgap, which provides a virtual classroom for individualised teaching experiences.
“The acquisition by GoStudent gives us the thrust to further scale Tus Media with all its brands to new markets and expand to even bigger regional geographies. I am excited to continue in my role as CEO to ensure Tus Media’s success and grow the team further,” said Albert Clemente, founder and CEO of Tus Media Group.
The announcement of the acquisitions has come only one month after GoStudent raised €300M in series D funding.
