We believe that in order to help students thrive both academically and personally, educators must adopt a holistic approach to learning. Today, we realise that there is so much more to success than exams and grades and that in order to help our students excel, we must consider their specific needs, requirements and wellbeing.
The new framework
This sentiment has been echoed through the new Ofsted framework, which helps to promote a holistic learning experience. Emphasis has shifted away from data and exam results to the curriculum and students’ personal development. This change sees the inspection focus on how schools are developing successful citizens who are knowledgeable academically, socially and personally.
Under the new Ofsted framework, the introduction of the key judgement Quality of Education sees the curriculum put at the heart of education. Its introduction replaced the previous Teaching, Learning & Assessment and Outcomes judgements and see’s them combined. This move means that Ofsted aren’t focusing so much on results, but instead on what curriculum is being taught and how – placing greater emphasis on content and pedagogy.

This merging of old judgement makes way for more importance to be placed on Behaviour & Attitudes and Personal Development, which are now two separate judgements and explore important, non-academic aspects of school but are transferable life skills and important life lessons. For example, Behaviour and Attitudes has a strong focus on good pupil behaviour, as well as good attendance and punctuality. Personal Development focuses on student wellbeing, both physical and mental, and on ensuring students have the knowledge they need to succeed in modern day Britain.
Ensuring that the whole child is cared for and educated is a necessary requirement to ensure the success of students, but it’s no easy feat. There is so much to consider and take into account to ensure students are as prepared and looked after as possible. However, achieving the level of insight needed to support students whilst not burdening teachers is no easy task.
