Helping female pupils to study STEM subjects
Female participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) continues to feature prominently on the public agenda. Indeed, the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts recently released their Delivering STEM skills for the economy report which highlights many ongoing concerns regarding STEM skills development. In terms of education, the first of two key points called for improving the quality of careers advice in schools which was described as “patchy at best, perpetuating misconceptions about STEM careers.” The second point reemphasized the need to “address marked gender imbalances in several areas of STEM learning and work.” The statistics for participation in HE (higher education) bear this out.
