Remote learning during lockdown saw engagement fall by 30%

Students’ interest began to falter in the second half of the school term, something Firefly has labelled ‘lockdown learning fatigue’

It’s A-level results week across the UK, and digital learning platform Firefly has released new figures showing the impact of lockdown learning, highlighting a 30% drop in engagement throughout the second half of term in something the platform has called ‘lockdown learning fatigue’.

The data also revealed a decline in parental engagement, falling by 35% by the end of term.

On top of this, the study showed that daily school hours reduced throughout the lockdown, with a majority (76%) of classwork being completed prior to 2pm.

Just over 64% of parents also feel the government should be doing more to ensure learners don’t fall behind, claiming that video instruction and digital learning is not sufficiently engaging students.

“As students receive their A-level results…we are beginning to see the uneven spread of remote learning provision and the huge challenges students faced last term. Some students will have significant catching up to do next term,” said Joe Mathewson, founder of Firefly.

“The controversy around the results also raises the question about whether the current exam system is fit for purpose anyway, and whether we should end or reduce exams and focus much more on more structured continuous assessment.

“We need the government to support the British edtech sector and recognise the role tech can play in providing personalised support for the millions of children in the UK, and particularly those ones that are struggling.”
