An A-level pupil from Cambridgeshire has been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship to support his plans for an engineering career.
Joe Bister, a pupil at The Leys, has a keen interest in aeronautics and plans to make a career in the field. Joe will receive £600 as part of the scholarship to put towards materials and projects, and will be assigned a mentor who is a professional engineer. The Leys will also receive £400 for equipment, materials or teacher training to enhance STEM subject delivery.
Arkwright Scholarships are awarded to students to support their career ambitions in the fields of engineering, computing, or technical design.

Nominated for the scholarship by head of DT Nicola Perkins, Joe had to undertake a project unrelated to his GCSE coursework as part of the application, for which he completed a watchmaking course in Munster, Germany, during a family holiday.
Joe said: “I’ve always liked watches and mechanical things, the movements and taking things apart. I would like to become an engineer because I find learning and applying the knowledge and skills satisfying. I hope to study aeronautical engineering at Cambridge of RWTH Aachen University.”
Joe was one of 400 students awarded an Arkwright Scholarship, selected from 1375 applicants from across the UK.
Physics teacher Alexandra Annett said: “We have been so impressed with Joe’s keen interest to use his knowledge and skills from class as a springboard to more demanding and more challenging projects.”
