Edinburgh University launches UK’s first online business master’s

The Scottish provider has partnered with edX to provide a course without the commitments of a full master’s degree

The University of Edinburgh has become the first UK HEI to launch an online business master’s course.

In partnership with edX, the university will offer a new MicroMaster’s programme open to graduate-level students.

Edinburgh University first launched online degrees in 2005 and, since then, more than 8,000 students have completed an online qualification with the provider. MicroMaster’s were first launched in 2016.

Our new MicroMaster’s course enables us to provide learners with key skills that are in high demand in the age of big data.
– Prof Wendy Loretto, dean of the business school

The first course from the business school, predictive analytics for business applications, is a five-step course focused on big data.

Learners can choose to study elements of the course for free or pay to access full course materials and assessments.

The programme offers 30 postgraduate credits, but there is no application process to take up the MicroMaster’s programme.

Professor Wendy Loretto, dean of the business school, said: “Our new MicroMaster’s course enables us to provide learners with key skills that are in high demand in the age of big data, and to reach out to learners who might not otherwise be able to study with the Business School.”
