Fareham College to lead Maths Centre for Excellence

The college, voted UK College of the year, will lead one of the 21 centres across the UK

Fareham College, the TES UK College of the Year, has been appointed as the ‘exceptional post-16 institution’ to lead one of the new 21 Centres for Excellence for mathematics in the UK.

The news was delivered by the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds MP, at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham last week.  

The £40m programme, first announced in the 2017 Industrial Strategy and established in response to the Sir Adrian Smith review of Post-16 maths, has been invested to support the post-16 sector to improve mathematics teaching across the country.

It will be rolled out over the next five years and is expected to create new and enhanced teaching approaches for maths, through sharing best practice. 

The main purpose of the centres is to enhance maths teaching (up to GCSE or equivalent) for students over the age of 16, helping them to improve their skills and secure valuable qualifications to enhance their future career prospects.

The maths Centre for Excellence that Fareham College will comprise a network of post-16 providers: Eastleigh College; Isle of Wight College; Southampton City College; Sparsholt College; Havant & South Downs College; St Vincent’s College and Highbury College. It will also be supported by the Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service and the Pioneer Teaching Alliance.

The centre will deliver collaborative working groups, which share and analyse best practice within the network and further afield to enhance the teaching practices in further education establishments and provide students with the best opportunity to succeed.

It will also provide professional development opportunities for current and aspiring maths teachers in further education. These opportunities will encompass: teaching, learning and assessment training; whole organisation approaches to developing maths and numeracy skills; and leadership of maths departments.
