Future engineers concerned about climate emergency

Almost half believe the climate crisis is the top challenge for science and engineering in the UK

A poll of teenagers embarking on an engineering career found that nearly half see climate crisis as the biggest challenge for UK scientists and engineers.

The poll, carried out by the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme, found that 44% of teenagers hoping to become engineers believe that the biggest challenge facing the UK over the next five years is the climate crisis, with 37% selecting managing existing fuel sources.

Three hundred and thirteen students answered the poll, all of whom will be receiving an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

The poll also included a question on what emerging technology the students found most interesting, with 44% citing autonomous vehicles, 29% artificial intelligence, and 26% robotics.
