London launches management MOOC

Whether you want to acquire or refine your management skills, a new MOOC developed by the University of London could be the answer

The inspirational new MOOC, ‘The Manager’s Toolkit: A Practical Guide to Managing People at Work’, is now available for registration on the online Coursera platform.

The six week course aims to give learners a practical guide to managing people at work. The course, created by Dr Chris Dewberry from Birkbeck, University of London, will introduce learners to objective, evidence based theories that encourage them to make managerial decisions by using all the information available to them.

In his introduction, Dr Dewberry explains what makes this course special: ‘A lot of management information is out there and much of it is based on very personal experiences and opinions. These opinions, though they may be strongly held, might not actually apply in many environments, and may hinder effective management if dogmatically adhered to. This course, however, is evidenced based. It holds no opinions and goes straight to the facts. This means that learners can be confident that the materials they are provided with can reliably inform their practice, and will encourage them to use all the information available to them, when making managerial decisions.’

Topics covered in the course include leadership and decision making, performance management, pay as a motivator and managing conflict, as well as job interviews.

Dr Chris Dewberry says: ‘It does not matter whether you are a first time manager in a shop or a middle manager in an office environment; the same skills apply to every work place. In the course you will engage with some Human Resource theories and then see how they translate into every day working life.’

At the end of the course, learners will be better equipped to choose suitable employees, to motivate and appraise their teams, to manage conflict in the work place and to lead and make effective decisions on a day-to-day basis.

Combining informative readings with explanatory videos from professionals and academics, this brand new MOOC from the University of London is both timely and relevant across the world.
