Education professionals, local business support organisations and manufacturing businesses came together at METALL #10 to discuss possible answers to the UK skills gap.
The event, held at the University of Chichester’s Engineering and Technology Campus in Bognor, heard input from delegates on what they thought were the top issues in addressing the manufacturing and engineering skills gap.
Some of the issues raised by delegates included encouraging more female students to take STEM A levels and degrees in engineering, teaching children about STEM subjects from an earlier age, and the career paths available for school leavers in manufacturing.

Chris Coopey, partner at practice director at accounting and consultancy firm MHA Carpenter Box, and who delivered the event’s welcome, said: “My view is that that government still has no real idea about the value and potential of the sector, which means that local action has to be taken.
“We will be organising a focus group off the back of this METALL meeting to take some of the ideas forward, which we hope will help businesses meet their skills needs.”
The MHA Manufacturing and Engineering Report, published in February this year, revealed that 89% of companies in the south were finding it difficult to recruit enough people with the right talent and skills to fill existing job vacancies.
