Scientists from the University’s School of Computer Science will be running workshops between 28 and 30 June and students will have the opportunity to see state-of-the-art home robotics as well as learning how to programme a home companion robot.
The workshops are free and open to all UK undergraduate and postgraduate students regardless of their academic field of study or background. No prior experience with robots or programming is required.
The University’s Robot House is a residential house in a leafy street in Hatfield. The University purchased the house 11 years ago in order to observe how ordinary people get along with machines in everyday life. It is home to several robots which are designed to care for people in their homes. Students who get a place on the workshops will be programming a care robot to help with an imaginary elderly person who lives alone.
Sometimes people are unsure about living with robots so this is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the benefits of robots which are designed to care for people in the home
Professor Kerstin Dautenhahn, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Hertfordshire said: “We are very excited about playing a role in UK Robotics Week and looking forward to welcoming students to Robot House. Sometimes people are unsure about living with robots so this is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the benefits of robots which are designed to care for people in the home.”
The closing date for applications is 3pm on 12th June 2016 and spaces are limited. Interested students can find out more about the event and how to apply by visiting https://www.roboticsweek.uk/homerobotics.htm or contacting Dr. Kheng Lee Koay at the University of Hertfordshire at [email protected].
