UK needs a million more engineers by 2020

Engineering Our World campaign aims to address engineering skills gap

The Royal Academy of Engineering reported earlier this year that the UK needs a million more engineers by 2020 to meet industry demand and a recent report published by the IET stated that 53% of employers find that a typical new engineering recruit does not meet their reasonable expectations.

This demonstrates the need for universities and companies to work together in addressing the skills gap, developing the best talent and championing career opportunities in the sector.

To promote a greater understanding of the role engineering plays in our everyday lives, The University of Sheffield has created a film with ITN Productions as part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) campaign, ‘Engineering our World’.

The University of Sheffield’s film explores how through outreach activities with primary schools, offering innovative routes into engineering education, investment in state of the art facilities for modern interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative research projects with industry, it is inspiring and developing tomorrow’s engineers who will go on to tackle the biggest challenges facing the modern world.
