ACS International School Cobham hosted over 30 schools and 300 local pupils aged 12–13 for their TeenTech Festival.
Founded by Tomorrow’s World presenter Maggie Philbin OBE and mechanical engineer Chris Dodson OBE, TeenTech is a charity aiming to “help students realise their own potential within science, technology and engineering-related careers”.

Three hundred students took part in team activities in three themed zones – Insight, Innovation, and Challenge – which were designed to develop skills such as teamwork and problem-solving.
The Innovation Zone challenged students to design an invention to solve a real-world problem. Pupils Mia and Catherine’s invention was chosen to represent ACS Cobham’s team.
From interactive experiments to in-depth discussions with industry experts, events such as this are a powerful motivation for students entering a critical time of academic study.

Mia said: “There’s lots of confusion around recycling. Our invention is designed to sort your rubbish automatically. A digital screen will examine the waste before you put it in the bin and will sort it into different compartments ready to be recycled. So you’d only need one bin.”
The Insight Zone allowed students to ask questions and gain insight from companies including British Aerospace, Bank of England, Network Rail and JVC Kenwood. In the Challenge Zone, they then took part in 30-minute tech-based activities such as designing a keychain to be 3D-printed, coding a robot to break into a bank vault, and solving a cybercrime case.
